On Thursday 5 November I will be reading some new work at 'New Frequencies - Poetry in a Digital Age' for this year's landmark 20th edition of Dublin Book Festival . Taking place in Belvedere Library on St Patrick's Campus of Dublin City University (DCU), this event sits in the middle of a day-long, four-event programme at the University with title 'Literature in the Digital Age' . DCU is partnering with Dublin Book Festival for the third year running, with the programme , curated by DCU Cultural Arts Officer Marcella Bannon and 2026 DCU/Arts Council Writer in Residence Colin Barrett, aiming to consider "the future of the written word and storytelling in an increasingly digital world." The Mediated Self at The University of Stuttgart + a broadcast on HORADS 88.6

Image
Last summer I travelled to Stuttgart on an invitation from Dr Jessica Bundschuh of the Department of English Literatures and Cultures at The University of Stuttgart, where over Friday 27 and Saturday 28 June 2025 I led a series of generative poetry workshop sessions in partnership with Cork-based poet Molly Twomey for around 60 participants composed of University students and 5th grade students from Dillmann Gymnasium. The title of our collaborative workshop project was 'The Mediated Self' and it consisted of three individually-led sessions each: mine focusing on sampling, collaborative writing, ekphrasis, collaging, and related poetics. My session 'Find a Pop Icon' in particular, spread over two days, was the source of much discussion, amusement, tumult and creative engagement from the students. My reading of the 132-line long collaborative, communal 'exquisite corpse' poem in its entirety, which I set for the class at the outset and which was contributed to b...

Irish University Review 55.2 (Autumn/Winter 2025)

Image
The Autumn/Winter 2025 issue of Irish University Review (Vol 55 No. 2) published in January 2026 carries two distinct contributions from me: The first is an interview I gave to Lucy Collins, Associate Professor of Modern Poetry at University College Dublin and editor of Irish University Review , reflecting on my curatorial project 'Is this a poem?' at Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI). It bookends the exhibition nicely since a public conversation with Lucy was a core element of its launch on 23 February 2024. This interview revisits some of the themes of that initial, undocumented conversation. It is based on the transcript of a new post-project conversation we recorded at MoLI for the museum's digital channel, RadioMoLI , in June 2025. From the introduction: This conversation between Lucy Collins and Christodoulos Makris began as a podcast for Radio MoLI, discussing I s This a Poem? Adventures on the Edge of an Art Form , an ambitious and innovative exhibition, curate...

Work That Happens Elsewhere: in-conversation in Books Ireland magazine

Image
I was pleased to be able to formalise an almost decade-long association with New Jersey / New York writer, poet and multimedia artist  Chris Campanioni  through a commissioned conversation for  Books Ireland magazine. The resulting 6,500 word piece exploring the in-conversation format as collaborative enterprise and literary genre has the title  'Work That Happens Elsewhere,'  and it was published on 5 December 2025. From the introduction: After almost a decade of correspondence, exchange of work and editorial activities, Chris Campanioni (New Jersey) and Christodoulos Makris (Dublin) met in person in New York City in January 2025, cementing a mutual understanding of their work, in particular how it shares strong kinship and an interest in fiercely contemporary culture and poetics. In this transatlantic in-conversation piece, composed remotely between 26 September and 05 November 2025, the poets reflect on each other’s work and their shared intermedial, cross-d...

Diachronic Bonhomie: a Cúirt International Festival of Literature poetry commission

Image
I was very happy to accept an exciting invitation by Cúirt International Festival of Literature director Manuela Moser to produce a brand new poem + poetry intervention in response to the festival's archives, to mark 40 years of Cúirt. My contribution, titled 'Diachronic Bonhomie', will be installed across the sites of the festival around Galway city over the duration of its 40th edition (8-13 April 2025) in a combination of print, visual and audio forms. And I will be speaking about the commission and related aspects of my practice in a festival event at The Mick Lally Theatre on Friday 11 April. Cúirt is a world class literature festival - one of Europe's oldest, and widely regarded as one of Ireland's finest. Among the writers programmed to participate this year are Sally Rooney, Paul Muldoon, Kayo Chingonyi, Roddy Doyle, Kevin Barry, Eimear McBride, Anne Enright, and Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian. Check out the full 2025 programme here . About 'Dia...

Recent Press (Part II): Poetry People (RTÉ Radio) / Business Post / Dublin Inquirer / Books Ireland

Image
As well as making work for books and other publication formats, my practice extends to performance and other modes of presentation, while my editorial and curatorial activities operate in tandem with my creative work feeding and influencing each other. Following on from the first part of this double post, which rounded up recent responses to my published work , below I log some press on my curated exhibition Is this a poem?  - whose run at Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) I'm happy to report has been extended to 22 September 2024 - and of the premiere of 'Press Play,' a collaborative cross-disciplinary composition and performance relating to Ireland's housing crisis. * On 7 April 2024, the inaugural episode of the radio programme Poetry People on Ireland's state broadcaster RTÉ Radio One included a segment called 'What is Poetry?' For this segment, prompted by the advent of Is this a poem? , the show's producers commissioned a short essay from Museum ...

It Reeks of Radio: video interview and reading for the Irish Poetry Reading Archive

Image
A couple of months ago I was interviewed on film by Dr Lucy Collins, associate professor at University College Dublin (UCD) School of English, Drama and Film, about my book It Reeks of Radio  (BLR Editions, 2023). In the same session I also read some excerpts from the book. These videos have now been released by UCD Special Collections as part of the Irish Poetry Reading Archive. They can be viewed on YouTube ( interview | reading ), on the Archive playlist , or below. The Irish Poetry Reading Archive  is "Ireland's only curated digital collection, where the voices of Irish poets, both North and South, doing readings, scholarly masterclasses, and in conversation, along with digital copies of poetry related materials (anthologies, programmes, posters) are preserved for future generations. Recordings are also made freely available in the UCD Digital Library." This is my second contribution to the Archive, following a bundle of poems from my second book The Architecture of...

Reimagining Literature in a Digital Space: an Arts Council of Ireland study

Image
The Arts Council of Ireland recently published a profile on my work as a poet operating in a post-digital landscape, specifically in relation to  sorry that you were not moved , my digital project in collaboration with Kimberly Campanello that was released by Fallow Media in February 2022. This study of my work and our project is one of five such profile pieces commissioned by The Arts Council. It was produced in the context of its new drive to support the Digital Arts in Ireland and in connection with the recent launch of its Digital Arts Policy. Titled 'Reimagining literature in a digital space' , the study was authored by Denise McDonagh of Culture Works , with an accompanying video element created by Kate Costello of Narrator & Co . It was composed following a transcribed informal conversation and interview with me - as director and lead artist on  sorry that you were not moved  - about the aims, development and impact of the project, as well ...

Contemporaneous Brand Strategy Document: A Choral Reading at Dublin Art Book Fair 2023

Image
Join me on Saturday 9 December at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios in Dublin for a participatory choral reading of poems from my book Contemporaneous Brand Strategy Document . The reading will be followed by an informal discussion with event host Wendy Erskine on polyphony in my work, the fragmentation of the lyric in contemporary poetry, and its implication on the dynamic between poet and audience. This event is part of the programme for Dublin Art Book Fair 2023 (7-17 December). The theme this year is 'Polyphonic' , with the associated programme of talks, readings, workshops, and participatory events curated by Wendy Erskine . Dublin Art Book Fair is Ireland’s leading art book fair and centre for artist books, and this year marks its 13th edition. Taking place in Temple Bar Gallery + Studios , it champions small, creative and independent publishers, and both Irish and international artist books. Within this mix, over 500 newly published and unusual publications on art, design, v...

It Reeks of Radio: the launch / the exhibition / early responses / a reading for Joseph M Hassett

Image
The Old Physics Theatre at Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) was nicely full for the launch of my fifth book of poetry  It Reeks of Radio  (BLR Editions)  on 26 September 2023, where I was in public conversation with this year's UCD / Arts Council of Ireland Writer in Residence, Victoria Kennefick. It was lovely to see many old and new friends and colleagues attend what was a lunchtime event on a weekday. Victoria's astute reading of the book, her skillful hosting of the conversation and her probing questions facilitated a dive into several of the strands explored in the book. I was happy to read excerpts and respond to questions from the audience. photo: Nessa O'Mahony The following day, a 14-panel exhibition that visually contextualises the book and overall project was installed on the walls of Newman Building (Arts Building) at University College Dublin. The exhibition was proposed and managed by Emer Beesley, Marketing And Communications Manager at UCD College ...

It Reeks of Radio (BLR Editions, 2023)

Image
I'm excited to announce that my fifth full-length book of poetry It Reeks of Radio , a hybrid poem incorporating documentary text and visuals composed through my commissioned engagement with RTÉ Radio archives held at University College Dublin (UCD), will be published on 26 September 2023. Especially exciting is the fact that It Reeks of Radio is the inaugural title from BLR Editions, a new imprint connected to the annual journal Belfield Literary Review  - a joint UCD / Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) publication venture. And I'm very pleased that the book will be launched during WORDFFEVER , a UCD one day creative writing conference taking place at MoLI on 26 September, as part of which I will be in conversation about the book with this year's UCD / Arts Council of Ireland Writer in Residence, Victoria Kennefick . Further details below: About the Book: It Reeks of Radio is a book-length poem composed entirely from fragments of communication around historical (pre-19...
