Ways of Writing: essay in Trumpet 4

My essay encompassing a discussion of the cross-stream: ways of writing project within a larger discussion of my curatorial activities and compositional interests appears in the latest issue of Trumpet, Poetry Ireland's quarterly pamphlet of poetry, reviews and essays. Future issues of Trumpet will include articles by poets who participated in cross-stream based on their presentations for the project.

My thanks to Poetry Ireland's Paul Lenehan for his interest. Issue 4 of Trumpet also features reviews of new books by Dylan Brennan, Angela Carr and Victoria Kennefick among others, as well as poems by Kim Moore, Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh and more.

Trumpet costs €2.00 per issue and is available individually from bookshops or directly from Poetry Ireland through subscription.

'Capital' at Irish Museum of Modern Art

On Saturday 5 September I will present a new long poem with title 'Capital' at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). This is part of a programme of events for The People's Pavilion installation, a public outdoor space located on the museum's front lawn where people can meet safely in specially designed social distancing circles. From the event description: 'Capital' is a polyphonic poem composed of fragments of text from unattributed reviews of establishments on Talbot Street, publicly available on Google Maps. It has its roots in Makris’s longstanding interest in the shifts in language use, communication and identity brought about by digital media, and their implication on poetic discourse. The poem maps the street through the kind of public-private writing prevalent online (the reviews often stray into personal anecdote). It Reeks of Radio: video interview and reading for the Irish Poetry Reading Archive

A couple of months ago I was interviewed on film by Dr Lucy Collins, associate professor at University College Dublin (UCD) School of English, Drama and Film, about my book It Reeks of Radio  (BLR Editions, 2023). In the same session I also read some excerpts from the book. These videos have now been released by UCD Special Collections as part of the Irish Poetry Reading Archive.
