Reading at Maynooth University

This coming Wednesday 7 November I'll be reading in the Arts and Humanities Institute at Maynooth University (Room 1.33, 1st floor, Iontas Building) in an event introducing myself and Paul Lynch as Writers-in-Residence for 2018-19. We start at 4pm and the event is free and open to the public.

Poetry's Environments at The University of Leeds

Earlier this month I contributed a performative paper at the international conference 'Poetry's Environments' organised and hosted by  Poetry@Leeds  at The University of Leeds. The conference took place over three days (9-11 June 2026) at Cloth Court Hall in Leeds city centre and the University of Leeds campus. Convened by a team headed by Kimberly Campanello , Professor of Poetry and Director of Poetry@Leeds,  'Poetry's Environments' aimed to "consider poetry that addresses the natural environment and the environments in which poetry is written, experienced, performed, preserved, and studied" by bringing together "international poets, critics, translators, archivists, activists, textual editors, digital specialists, literary professionals, and individuals, groups and organisations involved in poetry and its environments". The UpStart Slam: Poetry vs Wrestling

This Saturday 10 September I'll be taking part in UpStart 's second 'Slam' night , which inevitably pits poetry against American Superstar Wrestling. Like UpStart's hugely successful first 'Slam' of last February, it will happen at The Complex in Smithfield Square, Dublin 7, and it's a BYOB event. Food will be on sale. It starts at 8pm and it's €10 in (tickets at the door).

A Tour of the Lattice, by Maurice Scully (and Kevin Kiely's review)

What has been overlooked in the "controversy" over Kevin Kiely's review of Michael D Higgins' New and Selected Poems , published in the February 2012 issue of Books Ireland , is that in the same batch of reviews Kiely also responds rather dismissively to Maurice Scully's most recent volume  A Tour of the Lattice (Veer Books, 2011). I have no issue with anybody reading any text in any way that they wish - and whether they find it wonderful or objectionable I'll defend their right to write or speak about it without fear or prejudice. It seems important, though, to point out that there have been no dissenting voices over the way Kiely has trashed Scully's latest book in the way that poets , broadcasters and official bodies have rallied to the poetic defence of (president) Higgins.
