Features in Φιλελεύθερος and Cyprus Mail newspapers

A double-spread feature on my work by arts writer Elena Parpa appeared in the culture supplement of Sunday's (20 May) edition of Φιλελεύθερος - in terms of circulation Cyprus' largest broadsheet newspaper. With a title loosely translated as 'The Audacity of Poetry' and gleaned in the main out of a long conversation Elena and I had last week, it's a considered and well-researched piece, taking in my writing origins and concerns, my activities and inclinations, and much else, without falling back on cliché or easy conclusions. Our conversation took place in English, but she rendered what we talked about expertly in Greek. It can be viewed online in two separate parts (pages 24 and 25).

Also, last Tuesday 15 May - on the morning of my reading at the Home for Cooperation in Nicosia - the Cyprus Mail, the island's main English-language daily paper, published a piece on my work and upcoming participation in Poetry Parnassus. Though welcome, this is (in contrast) a heavily edited transcription of responses I gave to a series of questions they submitted - omitting most of the juicier stuff and inevitably distorting emphasis and meaning.

'Capital' at Irish Museum of Modern Art

On Saturday 5 September I will present a new long poem with title 'Capital' at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). This is part of a programme of events for The People's Pavilion installation, a public outdoor space located on the museum's front lawn where people can meet safely in specially designed social distancing circles. From the event description: 'Capital' is a polyphonic poem composed of fragments of text from unattributed reviews of establishments on Talbot Street, publicly available on Google Maps. It has its roots in Makris’s longstanding interest in the shifts in language use, communication and identity brought about by digital media, and their implication on poetic discourse. The poem maps the street through the kind of public-private writing prevalent online (the reviews often stray into personal anecdote). Inflammatory Speech: an Irish Museum of Modern Art commission

In July,  Nathan O'Donnell ,   Suzanne Walsh  and I operating as a collaborative unit received one of three project commissions from the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) to create new work in response to the ROSC 50 exhibition. After a four-month research and composition period, our resulting collaborative text and performance 'Inflammatory Speech' will be presented on  Saturday 11 November at 2pm in The Johnston Suite at IMMA  as part of  an event showcasing the ROSC 50 artist research commissions. Admission is free, but  booking is required  as places are limited : "Audiences are invited to attend a seminar comprising of artists’ performance, lecture presentations, screening and a panel discussion.
